About Ura Kyoto
裏京都 — The Kyoto behind the curtain
Ura Kyoto exists because the most meaningful experiences in Kyoto are the ones you almost miss. The temple at the end of the wrong turn. The alley that doesn't appear on Google Maps. The dawn light on a shrine that empties of tourists by 7am.
What This Is
Ura Kyoto is a free, independent guide to Kyoto's hidden and lesser-known spots, written for curious foreign travellers who want more than the standard itinerary. Every recommendation comes from personal experience and ongoing research — no sponsored content, no affiliate links, no partnerships with tourism boards.
The word "ura" (裏) in Japanese means "the back side" or "behind" — the parts of something you don't immediately see. It's the back alleys of Gion after the tourists leave, the hillside temple that doesn't appear in guidebooks, the dawn hour at a famous shrine when it feels entirely different.
What We Cover
Each article is a complete, self-contained guide to a single spot. We include verified practical information (access, hours, fees), seasonal context (what makes this spot special right now), and insider tips that come from repeated visits rather than a single afternoon. We update articles regularly to keep practical details accurate.
We organize spots by season because Kyoto is a fundamentally seasonal city. The same temple can feel like four completely different places depending on whether you visit under cherry blossoms, summer canopy, autumn maples, or winter silence.
What We Don't Do
We don't rank spots. We don't use phrases like "top 10" or "must-see" because every traveller's Kyoto is different. We don't cover spots that are already well-documented in every guidebook unless we have a genuinely different angle (like visiting Fushimi Inari at dawn instead of midday). We don't accept payment for coverage.
